Maximum Power Point Tracking (MPPT) controllers are more expensive than PWM, but provide a wider range of benefits. These controllers are good entry-level controllers for occasional use They provide greater control of the current flowing from your solar panels and better ‘trickle charging’ of your batteries at an economical price. While simple one or two stage controllers will shut off solar current when your battery is full, Pulse Width Modulated (PWM) controllers offer more functionality. There are different types of solar charge controllers. When your batteries achieve a 100% charge, the controller limits the current flowing from your solar panels to the batteries. When your batteries are low, the controller provides a full flow of current from your solar panels to replenish your battery banks. The controller maintains the life of the battery by preventing overcharging. The solar charge controller is a critical component in your RV solar system. This means they can operate at higher voltages than the voltage of the battery bank which they are charging.RV Solar 101: Charge Controllers (Part 4) The current from PV modules varies with sunlight levels but is fairly constant over a wide range of voltages. They allow a PV array to deliver up to 30% more power to a battery than it would if it were connected directly to the battery.
